A number of art fairs scheduled in Asia in 2009

A number of art fairs are scheduled to be held in Asia, starting with Art Dubai on 18th March. The art market saw a great lifting the past few years, but has been obstructed by the economic crisis that struck the world at the end of 2008. In November 2008, Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy and sold approximately USD 8,000,000 worth of artworks for primary and due to the long-term economic recess, many collectors are presenting quite a number of large masterpieces at auction houses. When the economy is in recess, collectors turn to art auctions and art fairs instead of galleries to buy artworks at reasonable prices in fair systems. Seoul Auction has recorded 83.6% sales with the total earning of KRW 1.18 billion at its first auction this year. It is a good start. The art citizens of the world are paying attention to the outcomes of Asia’s art fairs. Hyun Kim
Art Dubai 2009
Focus on Art Dubai 2009’s Abraaj Capital Art Prize, Mapping Palestine, Global Art Forum and Art Park Project. A significant highlight of this year’s fair will be the unveiling of the works of the recipients of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize. The prize provides an exciting opportunity for creative collaboration between international curators and artists from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region. The Global Art Forum plays host to a series of lectures and discussions featuring leading contemporary art thinkers such as: Sheikh Abdulla Al-Thani, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Birnbaum, Solomon R. Jerome Sans etc. The forum continues to create links between East and West through the exploration of professional and public interests in art. Mapping Palestine is a project curated by Samar Martha of Art School Palestine, which takes place in three different locations. Art Dubai’s project space Art Park is situated in the underground car park at the Madinat Arena and will be a cutting-edge space focusing mainly on film and video, reflecting the current vibrancy of these art forms in the Middle East. Art Dubai 2009
will be held during 18th-21th March 2009 at Madinat Jumerirah, Dubai

While Under45-year-old Artists

Opening on next Thursday at Sunworld Dynasty Hotel (Taipei), YOUNG ART TAIPEI will present you a perfect collision between young artists under 45 years old and an antique hotel with 26 years history. What is young? What is old? What is contemporary? What is classic? Wiping away all the pre-existing boundary, contemporary art works by young artists will occupy not only the exhibition space – the 15th floor of Sunworld Dynasty Hotel – at YOUNG ART TAIPEI but also mark their existence in the hotel lobby. Without doubt, they are the perfect match!
With the hospitality of Sunworld Dynasty Hotel, YOUNG ART TAIPEI display couples of artworks from both Japan and Taiwan in the public spaces. Those artworks exhibited in the lobby include Tokyo Kamen’s sculpture <Noah’s Ark> (represented by Art U-Room), Huang Tsang-Luen’s <P175>(represented by Jia Art Gallery), a mysterious painter from South Taiwan Ogay’s graffiti(represented by Der-Horng Art Gallery). The display window at the entrance also marks a new page of fashion in contemporary art society with the focus on two separate works from Shonandai Gallery’s represented artist Taeko Maezawa and Zin Jhi Gallery’s Huang Pu-Ching.

A HOTEL RENDEZVOUS WITH CONTEMPORARY ART - YOUNG ART TAIPEI 2009
It is as exciting as you have ever imagined. More than 40 galleries from 4 East-Asian countries gather together in YOUNG ART TAIPEI 2009 – the very first hotel art fair in Taiwan targeting young artists and young art– to bring you closer to a genre which we call contemporary art and to bring art collection to be part of your life. In YOUNG ART TAIPEI, you don’t have to be an established collector in hold of a great amount of wealth and a huge exhibition space. What you can expect is to open any hotel room door, walk in the room where artworks have already been waiting for your presence, and finally find THE ONE you sparkle with. And then it’s just exactly what we need in a hotel rendezvous.
Organized by Taiwan Contemporary Art Link – an association among four Taiwan galleries (AKI Gallery, Der-Horng Art Gallery, Dynasty Art Gallery, and Galerie Grand Siecle) promoting Taiwan contemporary art --, YOUNG ART TAIPEI 2009 desires to be the first hotel art fair in Taiwan with unique focus on young artists in Asian. Most of the exhibited artists in YOUNG ART TAIPEI are below 45 years old. The economical turbulence everyone never stops talking about seems to bring them little influence but even interestingly fortify their passion toward art. Such a passion is what YOUNG ART TAIPEI wishes to achieve in the event – to remind viewers the original meaning of the arts instead of eyeing nothing but its financial value. Through the cultural communication among different Asian regions, we also hope to create a healthy platform to encourage such a communication and to break-down the national boundary in the world of arts. We sincerely believe that only through the exchange among collectors/galleries/scholars/artists in various regions/cultures can the Asian art market be provided with a strong foundation.
After the 4-month-preparation for YOUNG ART TAIPEI 2009, we are happy to announce that 42 galleries (see the list below) which share the same belief with us will check in at Sunworld Dynasty Hotel, creating a new dynasty for contemporary art in Asia. In order to guarantee the carrying out of the mission statement of YOUNG ART TAIPEI, we adopt a jury system to lay out our exhibition list. It is, in fact, the first time for an art fair which takes place in Taiwan to adopt such a system. All of our jury members are established scholars in Taiwan, and they are all amazed by the quality of the applicants. After more than two-round-discussion, we finally put 80 percent of applicants into our exhibition list. 20 galleries are from Taiwan; 14 galleries are from Japan; 6 galleries from Korea, and 2 galleries from China.
Even though YOUNG ART TAIPEI attracts a huge amount of young galleries, many established galleries such as Mizuma Art Gallery, Gallery IDF, and Platform China all show their interest toward such an experience in Taipei. Some of the exhibitors from Japan are actually getting more and more familiar with the art market in Taiwan. Within the 14 galleries from Japan in YOUNG ART TAIPEI, 6 of them have came to ART TAIPEI 2008 last summer, including Gallery IDF, Gallery Kogure, Gallery Tsubaki, Gallery Hirota Bijutsu, Shonandai Gallery, and Unseal Contemporary Art. Taiwanese collectors’ interest in Japanese contemporary art seemed to encourage them significantly to seek further cooperation with the art market in Taiwan. The previous experience in ART TAIPEI by all means offered them much confidence to know Taiwanese collectors better in YOUNG ART TAIPEI.
Japanese galleries are not the only ones who feel excited about getting connected with Taiwanese collectors. Right after YOUNG ART TAIPEI 2009 has been officially announced last year, we have received application from America, China, Korea, Japan, and many South-East Asian countries. It is well known that Taiwanese collectors are always willing to embrace art from different cultures – probably owing to the unique diversity in Taiwanese cultures. Taiwanese collectors not only contribute one-third contemporary art collection in Asia – according to the statics provided by Sotheby’s Hong Kong –, they also hold an open mind to discover the different vocabulary hidden in the artworks from different countries. By creating an intimate rendezvous between art and viewers, we also hope to encourage collectors from different Asian countries to disregard the national boundary and to enjoy such an experience in art collection full of cultural exchange.
Just check in the hotel and check out the artworks. YOUNG ART TAIPEI is looking forward to your participation! Held from 2009/05/08 to 2009/05/10 at Sunworld Dynasty Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan, please check our website for more information: www.youngarttaipei.com

YOUNG ART TAIPEI - the 1st hotel art fair in Taiwan
.jpg)
The 1st Taipei / International Contemporary Art Fair “YOUNG ART TAIPEI” is the very first contemporary art fair in Asia that focuses on young artists under the age of 45. This fair aims to serve as a platform for contemporary art in Asia to communicate within the region.
According to statistics proves that one third of the transaction in Sotheby's Hong Kong sale of Asian Contemporary Art is contributed by Taiwanese collectors. This figure shows that Taiwan has become one of the most promising potential markets in Asia for consuming contemporary art pieces. In 2009, we will hold “YOUNG ART TAIPEI” in an attempt to not only integrate the large art collecting and investing force in the market, but also create further connections amongst the art collecting groups in Asia. Due to an open economic policy towards free funding flows and a low 5% business tax, Taipei City, the capital of Taiwan provides a perfect environment and a convenient channel for international galleries to promote their own artists. Therefore, from May 7, 2009 to May 10, 2009, we will invite up to 40 high quality international galleries in Asia to join our fair in Taipei. Through our partnership with Sunworld Dynasty Hotel Taipei, we offer you a sophisticated and elegant venue, as the platform for all participating galleries, curators, artists, collectors and audiences.
This fair is organised and held by TAIWAN CONTEMPORARY ART LINK in association with four local galleries. You can visit us online at http://www.youngarttaipei.com/ for more information.

Galerie Grand Siecle in Pulse Miami 2008

Galerie Grand Siècle announces the participation in PULSE MIAMI this year. Being one of the most established galleries in Taiwan, Galerie Grand Siècle aims to promote Young Taiwanese artists to the world. We especially focus on new media arts, doing exhibitions not only in our gallery but also in international art fairs in Europe, USA, and East Asia.
We would like to present 3 artists – Kuo I-Chen, Wang Ya-Hui, Yao Jui-Ching,– and their works in PULSE Miami 2008. The 3 artists are all between 29 and 40 years old. They show their perspective on human existence – especially concerning the co-existence between human being and technology. Kuo I-Chen, the youngest among the all, is fascinated by human destruction and existence of survivors afterward in his <Survivor Project>. In Yao Jui-Chung’s work <Phantom of History>, he dresses himself up as dictators of the past and waves his hands to people from a mountain top from which he hangs himself. He is a representative of Taiwanese artists who born in 1960s, doing works from historical angle to reflect the fact nowadays. Wang Ya-Hui, as a female artist, she often illustrates the environment from her daily life with very poetical images by single channel videos. The 3 of them all demonstrate a new face in Taiwan contemporary art.
The cross-cultural interaction is the nourishment of artistic development. We look forward to provide a different glance from the other side of the world to the American audience.

Asian Art is main focus at the ART.FAIR 21
creative face - the creative network magazine
From 2nd until 5th October, 2008 the sixth ART.FAIR 21 presented 59 galleries from 9 countries and 3 continents. The admissions committee had chosen the participating galleries out of over 280 applicants. This fair for current art has become a must for friends and lovers of contemporary art visiting the "Kunstherbst" in the Rhineland. The public's constantly growing interest which reached the highest level this year and again very good sales underlines the fair's successful concept: a lively and exciting combination of well-known and young galleries, and renowned artists and newcomers. Yasha Young from Gallery Strychnin (Berlin, London, New York) and member of the advisory board said: " It is fairs like the ART.FAIR 21 that have become the true measure of the art that permeates society today, of the art that we as gallery owners can bring into society."
"The main focus of the ART.FAIR 21 changes from fair to fair. This year new Asian markets are at the centre, represented by a couple galleries from Korea and Taiwan", said Walter Gehlen, ART.FAIR 21 director. And Michael Schulz from Gallery Michael Schulz (Berlin, Seoul, Beijing) and member of the advisory board added: "The Korean and the German art markets have always been closely connected - the reunification of ART.FAIR 21 is a consistent and logical development of recent years. More and more Korean artists are represented by German galleries. The Korean counterparts are not only looking forward to positive business accounts, but also to the placement of their artists in German galleries and museums."
Four galleries from Taiwan and six galleries from Korea presented a mixture of established and upcoming artists at the ART.FAIR 21. From Seoul for example KEUMSAN GALLERY showcased among others digital-prints from Kim Joon's ‘bird land' series and THE HODU GALLERY presented a solo-show by the artist D Hwang. How multifaceted Korean art is became obvious by visiting GALLERY 2 which exhibited the colourful paintings by the well-known artist Lee Dongi, PHILIP KANG GALLERY with the keyboard-on-panel art by Kim Young Seok, KWANHOON GALLERY which showed among others paintings by Lee Dongjo or GALERIE DE LEE with paintings by Hong Kyong-Tack. The four Taiwan based galleries AKI GALLERY which showcased paintings by Lo Chan-Peng, DER-HORNG ART GALLERY presenting the artist Wei-Ho Wang, DYNASTY ART GALLERY showing Chiu Chih-Wei and GALERIE GRAND SIÈCLE presenting among others Su Meng-Hung provided an exciting insight into Taiwan's art scene.

ART.FAIR 21 CALLS THE TUNE
The Fair's Concept for Contemporary Art Is a Hit
This year new Asian markets are at the centre of the sixth ART.FAIR 21: From 2 to 5 October four galleries from Taiwan and six galleries from Korea will be presented among 59 other exhibitors. This fair for current art has become a must for friends and lovers of contemporary art visiting the 'Kunstherbst' in the Rhineland. 30,000 visitors attended the ART.FAIR 21 last year. The public's constantly growing interest and last year's record sales underline the fair's successful concept: a lively and exciting combination of well-known and young galleries, and renowned artists and newcomers.
This year the advisory board and the fair's management encouraged exhibitors to stage solo presentations. Consequently one man shows have developed as an individual presentation format. In some cases, works will be shown in very large exhibiting areas thus breaking up the customary rhythm of serial booths in favour of an open and dynamic picture. On the whole, the reserved booths' sizes show the gallerists` great satisfaction with the fair's concept – over fifty percent measure between 150m² and 70m². After a thorough selection by the admissions committee, ART.FAIR 21 will present 59 galleries from 9 countries and 3 continents out of over 280 applicants. A top-rate interdisciplinary event programme consisting of music/video, performance and dance/theatre will add to the already vibrant spirit which makes ART.FAIR 21 a lucrative and up-to-date market place for 21st century art.
ART.FAIR 21 PREVIEW 2008 (a selection)
Established Approaches
Names such as Tony Cragg and Gerhard Richter, whose most recent works from 2008 will be on display at the Terminus booth (Munich), belong to the greats of contemporary art. Current works of the last three years by John Chamberlain will make this gallery's booth a magnet once again. As always, the mixture of renowned and young artists presented by Terminus fits in with the concept of ART.FAIR 21.
Fergus Greer is a well-known portrait photographer who works both in London and Los Angeles. He portrays important celebrities, artists, actors, and politicians, such as Damien Hirst, Hugh Grant, Julie Chiristie and Margaret Thatcher. His photographs are collected among others by the National Portrait Gallery in London. Susanne Albrecht (Munich) will be presenting Fergus Greer's work together with current works by Jus Juchtmans.
The Flemish artist Jan Fabre is responsible for even giving dead flies and run over dogs appropriate places in museums. Whether in the field of performance or sculpture, or as a director or choreographer, Jan Fabre is one of the trend-setters in contemporary art. The Italian gallery Berengo Studio 1989 from Venice will be showing 'Schitjtende vredesduiven en ratten van de lucht (model for the Louvre) at the ART.FAIR 21. This work from 2008 consists of stone, Murano glass and ink.
The de Lee Gallery from Korea will add contemporary art highlights to the fair by presenting old masters of Pop Art such as Tom Wesselmann, Damien Hirst and Sigmar Polke.
Geuer & Breckner from Düsseldorf will be showing aquarelles by Norbert Bisky and current works by Günther Főrg and A.R. Penck.
Max'Projects-SixfriedrichliaUngar from Munich will present Peter Zimmermann and others.
Newcomers
Dirk Brőmmel, the artist introduced by Albert Baumgarten (Freiburg), turns the digitally clipped motifs in his works into essential protagonists. The series shows an entire compendium of ships on the Rhine as seen from above. The perspective explains his method: Dirk Brőmmel's photographs are shot from bridges.
Once again the Kurdish artist Erdogan Bulut, pupil of Per Kirkeby and Thomas Bayrle, will dominate the booth of galerie k9 (Hanover) with his large paintings. Lovers and collectors of his paintings will be amazed by his brand new photographic works.
What defines man? These kinds of existential questions concern the young artist from Düsseldorf, Yvonne van Acht. In 2006 she took part in the ART.FAIR's special exhibition as a finalist of the Gesellschafter ART.AWARD. It was her first opportunity to test her wings in the art market. This year Yvonne van Acht will be presented by Geuer & Breckner (Munich).
Unusual examples of digital art, for instance by Gero Gries, will be on display at the booth of the Berlin based gallery for digital art, [DAM]. This artist sees computer-assisted image production as a continuation of painting with other methods. His pictures seem photorealistic. However, it would impossible to create them photographically. Margret Eicher offers a contrast to this approach. The artist is best known for her large tapestries. She produces works which combine contemporary themes and traditional media thus creating a dialogue.
The works by the Spanish artist Salustiano Garcia stand out because of his colourful and unusual portraits. His risky format of choice, the round, classic tondo shape, his idiosyncratic approach to colouring and the elegance of the models contribute to create a dramatic atmosphere which draws the observer to his pictures. The Munich based Galerie von Braunbehrens will supply the perfect venue. As always their booth will be one of the main attractions at the fair.
Young Perspectives
artKitchen (Amsterdam, Netherlands) shows Hugo Kaagman
The international artist Hugo Kaagman is a key figure in the Netherlands when dealing with Stencil – art.
Crespi (Milan, Italy) shows Lisi Raskin
This artist creates complex installations which conjure up post-atomic visions. They give a shape to the tensions, dangers and fears inspired by the real and imaginary threats which affect mankind today.
Wolfgang Gmyrek (Düsseldorf, Germany) shows Katja Pfeiffer
Katja Pfeiffer's room-filling installations consist of painted MDF boards which are staggered in order to create a fascinating illusionary area in the style of a 19th century diorama.
Jőrg Heitsch (Munich, Germany) shows Georg Küttinger
Georg Küttinger creates a fictitious picture from separate photographs of a landscape. Different perspectives merge, overlap and create something new. The stunning result: we are looking at one and the same landscape but we see many different angles, impressions and visions.
McCaig-Welles & Rosenthal (San Francisco/Brooklyn, USA) show Eric Joyner
Joyner's works are influenced by pop culture and traditional technique. His paintings are defined by exuberant and strong brush strokes which underline the gravity in his works.
Strychnin (Berlin, London, New York) shows David Hochbaum
David Hochbaum's pictures have many layers: the figurative approach of 19th century photography and the methods of medieval alchemists are blended not only physically but also historically . But this is a 20th century cubist's vision.
Barbara von Stechow (Frankfurt Germany) shows Justine Otto and Rudd Cameron
Justine's Otto's paintings are defined by adolescents whose direct and serious expressions reveal their emotions. Justine Otto is a graduate of the Frankfurt Städelschule where she studied under Peter Angermann and Michael Krebber. The Berlin based British artist Cameron Rudd captures scenes with a video camera and turns them into painted snapshots. These pictures of nightly hotspots, public meeting points and current events resemble blurry film stills.
SOLO
The Cologne based Galerie Teapot will focus on the artist Thomas Grundmann in a one man show. His 'Simpelst Collages' which are painted in oil, create a flurrying impression. By combining only two elements, he creates a totally new and complex world of meaning thus inviting us to think about our iconography.
Burkhard Eikelmann from Düsseldorf will present the newcomer Nathan Ritterpusch in a solo show. He belongs to a new generation of New York artists who make use of a variety of media and sources of inspiration. The motifs alternate between science fiction, fairytales and personal experiences.
The booth of Jos Art from Amsterdam is entirely dedicated Benjamin Nachtwey. Nachtwey sees his pictures as a kind of memorial work because the motifs are frequently based on subjective experiences. Each topic requires a specific style of painting: the city calls for other formal solutions than the thematic complex petrol stations or green landscapes.
SPECIAL
Korean Art Inspires Fresh Impetus. 'Made in Taiwan' Becomes a Seal of Approval
The Korean artist Seo, whose work can be seen at the booth of Michael Schultz (Berlin, Germany), not only reflects a confrontation with the German, but also with the European art tradition. Allusions to works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Caspar David Friedrich are discernable. However, her 'contour' is of Korean origin. It structures, outlines and forms landscapes and human bodies. She uses up to 10,000 pieces of paper in her pictures thus creating a remarkable level of structure and depth.
Dynasty Art Gallery (Taipeh, Taiwan) shows Lai Pei-Yu
<City-Taipeh> is an excerpt from 'City-Series'. These pictures were copied and converted into dots. The dots' constellation gives the work the appearance of a 'zipped file' of Taipeh.
Grand Siècle (Taipeh, Taiwan) shows Su Meng-Hung
In 2003 the artist created the 'Kai Dao Di Mi' series by using flowers and birds of the Ming and the Ching Dynasty from the National Palace Museum Collection. Since then he has developed a language which represents a dialogue between classic tradition and modern concepts.

On the whole, the reserved booths’ sizes show the gallerists` great satisfaction with the fair’s concept – over fifty percent measure between 150m² and 70m². After a thorough selection by the admissions committee, ART.FAIR 21 will present 59 galleries from 9 countries and 3 continents out of over 280 applicants. A top-rate interdisciplinary event programme consisting of music/video, performance and dance/theatre will add to the already vibrant spirit which makes ART.FAIR 21 a lucrative and up-to-date market place for 21st century art. ......《more》 |

Huang Hsin-Chien's Artwork of 7th Shanghai Biennale

Shanghai, Shall We Dance?︱interactive installation︱variable dimensions︱2008
Huang Hsinchien's work, Shanghai, Shall We Dance? tells a story in the public space of the Shanghai Museum of Art by turning an art hall into a place of relaxation and romantic dancing for ordinary people. Viewers are invited onto a typical Shanghainese dance floor for a spontaneous dance. The interactive nature of the work turns images of foreboding highrise buildings into images of visitors dancing together. The appearance of the buildings changes with the dancers body movements. City residents are used to urban space being segmented by buildings. However, this perception is questioned and inverted in this work, which guides viewers to rethink the nature of urban space and its causal relationship with their own actions from their own individual perspectives.

Galerie Grand Siècle in ART TAIPEI 2008
Galerie Grand Siècle at ART TAIPEI 2008
Wang Ya-Hui, Kuo I-Chen, Chen Yung-Hsien, and Sam Su (Su Yu-Hsien).
Established in 1999, Galerie Grand Siècle is proud to be one of the established galleries in Taiwan promoting young and emerging artists. In its early stage, Galerie Grand Siècle focuses more on Chinese modern and contemporary artists. Since 2005, however, our emphasis has been gradually switched to young Taiwanese artists working on new-media art. While Galerie Grand Siècle is about to celebrate its tenth anniversary, ART TAIPEI 2008, for the first time, coincidently targets new-media art as its annual theme <Art and Tech – Wandering>. Echoing the theme, this year Galerie Grand Siècle is demonstrating the recent works of three presented new-media artists: Wang Ya-Hui, Kuo I-Chen, and Chen Yung-Hsien. We also invite Sam Su (Su Yu-Hsien), an emerging artist who is still a student in the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts, to exhibit his awarded work <Identify A Fine to Touch to Press to Feel> (2007 Taipei Art Prize). Four artists will definitely bring you to the world where you can wander among the various façades of digital images.

Viewers are probably familiar with the detachedness in Wang Ya-Hui’s previous works. In the past two years, she has adopted some natural elements to capture the transformation between the perception of viewers and the representation of the outer world. At Art Taipei 2008, Wang Ya-Hui again fabricates a moon and a snowman. In <When I look at the Moon>, we experience the breaking between our cognition and our perception while the “moon” is released in the final scene. Also, <The Tropical Work: Snowman> provides an interesting comparison when a snowman is placed at the tropical coast in the southern part of Taiwan, where snow can be impossibly seen. Such a comparison perfectly demonstrates a juxtaposition between the familiar images and the unfamiliar scenery.
Since Kuo I-Chen’s solo exhibition <Mutation> in 2007, the exhibited work <Survivor Project> has received frequent invitations overseas. In the project, Kuo desires to bring out a discussion on how the upheaval in our living space threatens the survival of human beings to the extent that there is nothing but uneasiness in our psychological status. Kuo retrieves images from a number of calamities in the human history, including the 911, the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and the tsunami triggered by it, the hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War, air crash, earthquake, etc. Through the reconstruction of the images, he created an eschatological scene which seems to be out of place in real life. Meanwhile, the visible film grains caused by intended low dpi subtly brings a surrealistic touch to the artwork as if it is a reshooting site of a Hollywood movie. The exploration rover <Survivor> in the work wanders about the abandoned ruins – where human beings have once inhabited – to search for the sole faith in life. A trace of "I'm Still Here" in the devastation thus manifests a past/future parable of survival.
.jpg)
Chen Yung-Hsien has been fascinated by the representation of human bodies for a long time. In his latest work <Man in A Loop>, he starts from his personal experience to observe and to intervene the physical reaction of others. He further meditates the interrelation between the body of his own and the bodies of others, trying to locate the “present” with mechanical time and artificial loop and to explore the tiny but noticeable loop of physical motion in our daily life. By the tracing the deviation caused by intermittence, pause, and elongation, Chen allows viewers to detect the hidden outlet in the loop.

As the youngest artist presented by Galerie Grand Siècle at Art Taipei 2008, Sam Su is recently selected to be the residing artist in Gwangju Museum of Arts. The 2007 Taipei Arts Award prizewinner <Identify A Fine to Touch to Press to Feel> is inspired by medical illustration. Sam Su turns the stomach into a heart-shape image. The teeth are also braced with sparkling diamond. In Su’s work, viewers are invited into a world where the emotionless medical illustration is revitalized with fashionable visual symbols. With such a technique – the so-called “micro-high artificial limb” – Su successfully adopts the adjusted rationality to capture sensibility.

The most important platform for Chinese arts.
Art Taipei, whose former name is Taipei Art Fair International, is the most long-standing art fair in Asia. Since 1992, on the demanding from both galleries and collectors, Art Taipei has been organized by Art Galleries Association for 14 years.
The attraction of Art Taipei is Chinese arts. Art Taipei is the most experienced and professional art fair trading Chinese arts. This is depends on the great knowledge and relationship of Taiwan galleries. By 1995, Art Taipei innovated and became an international art event. Besides galleries form Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia, there were also some participants form Europe and North America. After 2000, with the open policy betw een Taiwan and China, galleries form China and Hong Kong have increased and Art Taipei now is truly the most important platform for Chinese arts.
A professional art fair in presenting Asian art creation.
Art Taipei is also well known because of our foresight. From 2004, “Artist of the Year “ and “Taiwan Young Artists Special Exhibitions” projects not only bring great art into Taiwan but also push Taiwan emerging artists into international stage. In Art Taipei 2006, two new sectors “Asia Live” and “Ela-Aisa” focus more on contemporary and electronic arts.
Through these pioneering projects, we guarantee Art Taipei a professional art fair in presenting Asian art creation as well as the best venue for trading Asian arts.
The best collectors in Chinese community.
Taiwan art market has been mature sine 1980’s. Taiwan collectors have been brought up from this established environment, and now they are the best collectors in Chinese community. To serve these collectors is our first mission. It is also the power to make Art Taipei improved and transformed into a contemporary art fair.

Article: Hong Kong\'s Art Aspirations
The city wants to be Asia's culture capital, and ART HK 08, a glittering event of high-profile artworks and VIPs, may be just the ticket
By Frederik Balfour in Business Week
May 16, 2008, 7:25AM EST

Art by Jean-Michel Basquiat photo courtesy of Max Lang Gallery
At Hong Kong's convention center overlooking Victoria Harbor, a large crowd gathers around local performance artist Li Wei as he shakes and wriggles in an effort to shed hundreds of mirror shards stuck to his body. Nearby, another Hong Kong artist, Movana Chen, shuffles her way through the crowd wrapped head to toe in a "body container" she knitted from shredded catalogues from luxury retailer Shanghai Tang and ArtAsiaPacific magazine.
When not focusing on Chan, hundreds of VIP guests, clutching flutes of Moët Chandon (LVMH) champagne, roam the floor for a sneak preview of contemporary art from every corner of the world. And in the VVIP section, the very special guests sit on white leather couches, nibbling seared tuna, Thai shrimp cakes, and filo with baked goat cheese, courtesy of lead sponsor Lehman Brothers (LEH).
Welcome to the opening night of ART HK 08, the city's first world-class art fair in more than a decade. Hong Kong officially brands itself "Asia's World City," and it has a lot going for it: superb infrastructure, an extraordinary skyline, beautiful countryside, and some of the best shopping and food anywhere. It has also long been a town whose denizens have unashamedly served Mammon—and the relentless pursuit of material wealth has, to put it bluntly, turned the city into something of a cultural wasteland.
New Wealth Looking for an Outlet
Magnus Renfrew is trying to change that. If Renfrew, the director of the Hong Kong International Art Fair, has his way, the Special Administrative Region may establish itself as a major stop on the global art circuit on a par with London's Frieze Art Fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, and TEFAF Maastricht. After all, there's no shortage of buying power in the region: Hong Kong is the third largest art auction market after New York and London, according to Christie's, the world's largest auction house. Christie's sold $473 million worth of art in Hong Kong last year, compared with $2.67 billion in New York and $2.04 billion in London.
Contemporary artworks from China, Korea, and India have seen meteoric price gains in recent years. And, unlike the U.S., the E.U. or China, Hong Kong has no import taxes on art, making the city more attractive for both collectors and dealers. "It's an ideal location for an international art fair," says Renfrew. "The earth is tipping on its axis, and the economies of Asia and all the new wealth created means people are looking for different ways to spend their money."
Whether Hong Kong is ready to embrace Renfrew's vision will be revealed during the fair, which runs from May 15—18. ART HK 08 features over 600 works from 102 galleries representing 20 countries from the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and North America. There is $64 million worth of art for sale, including pieces from some of the top contemporary dealers.
Blue-Chip Works
London's Ben Brown Fine Arts is flogging an Andy Warhol silk screen of the 1962 Studebaker Avanti cars worth about $3.7 million, and crosstown rival Marlborough Fine Art is hawking a Francis Bacon work entitled Man at the Wash Basin with a list price of $34 million. There are also works by Damien Hirst, Picasso, and Robert Rauschenberg.
But while such blue-chip works from the West may command the highest prices, Art HK 08 also aims to cash in on the growing demand for Asian contemporary works from India, China, Korea, and Japan. More than 60% of the galleries are from the region, including 12 from Hong Kong and several from Shanghai and Beijing, featuring such hot-selling mainland artists as Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Mingjun, and Xu Bing. Other fast-rising Asian stars include Rashid Rana of India, Haris Purnomo of Indonesia, and Korea's Bae Joon-sung.
Hong Kong's gateway status is a big selling point for Max Lang, who brought works from his eponymous gallery in New York including an oil painting by Jean Michel Basquiat priced at $7.5 million, an oil by Keith Haring, and works by up-and-coming Chinese photographer Cui Xiuwen. "The art world goes where the money goes," says Lang. "There is lots of luxury and affluence, and this is a huge banking center, and high net worth and the art world go hand in hand. This whole area is inordinately wealthy."
