Thinking: China Fatigue?

On May 17,
Marc Spiegler posted an interesting article in ArtWorld Salon: "Auctionmania: Where are the Chinese artists?". He found there are only few Chinese contemporary works in New York sales last two week. That's true, compared to the auction last November, take Phili de Pury for instances, there are 50 Chinese contemporary lots in Part sale, but there is only 4 lots this time.

"I' m not quite sure how to interpret this. Was no one trying trying to flip their Chinese contemporary paintings? That's doubtful. Are the collectors or auctioneers thinking these works will go higher in Hong Kong? More likely. Or maybe the auction houses feared that a market backlash was due after all the China hype?"

Well, here is the insider news form our side. Chinese contemporary arts in Asia (China, Taiwan and other countries) are now mostly bought by Chinese galleries who thinks if they keep the artworks longer, the price will keep on raising. And yes, some do believe them can get better deal in Hong Kong auctions rather than in New York or London. However, I also believe that the auction house in New York or London, they start to treat these lots / dealers / investor much more carefully. No one want the bubble bust in their home court.

Reviews: Art Critic Wu Yin-huei on Hua Chien Chiang Celestial World

Immortal Shadows in the Temporal RealmHua Chien Chiang 華建強’s Celestial World       by Wu Yin-huei

Tracing the Heavens in Gouache
Despite having no previous formal training in painting, Hua Chien Chiang
華建強 decided to pursue art at university after completing his military service. On the strength of little more than his fondness for doodling, he gained entry into the arts education department at National Taichung Teachers’ College (renamed National Taichung Teachers College of Arts Education), and in 2002 joined the Master’s of Fine Art program at Taipei National University of the Arts. Hua first encountered the gouache medium as a sophomore at university. Its high mineral content makes gouache sparkle in the light like glitter, while its thick layering both brings out rich strata of color and sometimes produces unexpected effects of color and lighting. Falling in love with gouache’s color qualities in spite of the complexity of the production process, Hua Chien Chiang 華建強 approached the medium with the relish of a willing subject aiming at self-improvement.

Aki Gallery artist Hua Chien Chiang 華建強 shows in Taipei Fine Arts Museum

New Blooms of the Divine
- Solo Exhibition by Hua Chien Chiang 華建強

2007.5.5 - 2007.7.1

Taiwan glue color painting is about 70-80 years old in history, and mostly featured elegant and plain looks, but Hua Chien Chiang 華建強 brings a whole new life into it by adding post-modern sarcasm to traditional Chinese paintings to create a kind of divine scene with splendid changing fiction and reality between comics and landscape paintings.
