Resonance: Tseng Wei-Hao’s Solo Exhibition

Some keep a diary in lines; some keep it in paintings; and there are also some keeping it in voice. Having just finished the residence in Charlotte (the United States) and Gwangju (Korea), the sound-installation artist Tseng Wei-Hao is packing up his previous works and presenting them on the wooden boxes in his solo exhibition <Resonance> at Galerie Grand Siècle from 31 Oct. to 23 Nov., 2008

Since the early stage of Tseng’s artistic experiment, he has been fascinated by the interrelation among
sound, space, and body.  Viewers can easily distinguish his works by the huge installation which occupies the whole exhibition space, the human touch, the finger tips and the carbon ink, the interactive noise transmitted through human body.  Among these elements Tseng Wei-Hao demonstrates a brand new world which has never been probed into by our pre-existing visual experience, in order to “search for the true human perception through a standardized environment,” says the artist.

Tseng Wei-Hao started a series of experiments on “noise” – which was defined as the essence of voice by the artist – between 2005 and 2005.  The black lines painted on the walls intended to deliver a conceptual message through the interaction with the human body.  Tseng also transformed the function of the amplifier in his works.  As a machine which used to passively receive digital signals so as to emit sounds, the amplifier in Tseng’s installation becomes the core of his artistic concept to actively emit the noise, which is created by the interaction between the human body and the carbon ink.  Viewers, on the one hand, are “forced” to acknowledge the existence of the noisy sound which we are so eager to wipe out in our daily life.  On the other hand, viewers no longer adopt the omniscient perspective to observe the installations.  Instead, they become an indispensable part of its completion.  The “human touch” connects both human body and machine in the circulation of sound.  The created “noise,” therefore, seems to be brought into life.

Asian Art is main focus at the ART.FAIR 21

creative face - the creative network magazine

From 2nd until 5th October, 2008 the sixth ART.FAIR 21 presented 59 galleries from 9 countries and 3 continents. The admissions committee had chosen the participating galleries out of over 280 applicants. This fair for current art has become a must for friends and lovers of contemporary art visiting the "Kunstherbst" in the Rhineland. The public's constantly growing interest which reached the highest level this year and again very good sales underlines the fair's successful concept: a lively and exciting combination of well-known and young galleries, and renowned artists and newcomers. Yasha Young from Gallery Strychnin (Berlin, London, New York) and member of the advisory board said: " It is fairs like the ART.FAIR 21 that have become the true measure of the art that permeates society today, of the art that we as gallery owners can bring into society."

"The main focus of the ART.FAIR 21 changes from fair to fair. This year new Asian markets are at the centre, represented by a couple galleries from Korea and Taiwan", said Walter Gehlen, ART.FAIR 21 director. And Michael Schulz from Gallery Michael Schulz (Berlin, Seoul, Beijing) and member of the advisory board added: "The Korean and the German art markets have always been closely connected - the reunification of ART.FAIR 21 is a consistent and logical development of recent years. More and more Korean artists are represented by German galleries. The Korean counterparts are not only looking forward to positive business accounts, but also to the placement of their artists in German galleries and museums."

Four galleries from Taiwan and six galleries from Korea presented a mixture of established and upcoming artists at the ART.FAIR 21. From Seoul for example KEUMSAN GALLERY showcased among others digital-prints from Kim Joon's ‘bird land' series and THE HODU GALLERY presented a solo-show by the artist D Hwang. How multifaceted Korean art is became obvious by visiting GALLERY 2 which exhibited the colourful paintings by the well-known artist Lee Dongi, PHILIP KANG GALLERY with the keyboard-on-panel art by Kim Young Seok, KWANHOON GALLERY which showed among others paintings by Lee Dongjo or GALERIE DE LEE with paintings by Hong Kyong-Tack. The four Taiwan based galleries AKI GALLERY which showcased paintings by Lo Chan-Peng, DER-HORNG ART GALLERY presenting the artist Wei-Ho Wang, DYNASTY ART GALLERY showing Chiu Chih-Wei and GALERIE GRAND SIÈCLE presenting among others Su Meng-Hung provided an exciting insight into Taiwan's art scene.

About Germany Contemporary Art…

Because of the distance involved, citizens of Taiwan have limited chances to appreciate and enjoy German contemporary art which currently leads the way in modern art. Through the efforts of Aki Gallery, with over a year of planning, this significant exhibition of new German contemporary art is presented to the Taiwanese people. . Curator Dr. Bernhard Zünkeler is arranging a valuable group exhibition that includes three famous historical German Art schools: Berlin, Düsseldorf and Leipzig. These three important art schools reflect the development of contemporary art during the 80s and 90s and it is believed largely accepted that they are the most influential in that field.

Expressionism
Expressionism originated in Berlin, Germany and reflected the turbulence and anxiety of World War One. This School is in direct opposition to French Expressionism, linking chaos and people's suffering. Explain why the difference between them! In other words, Expressionism was an ideological resistance by artists who decried the unhealthy socio-economic environment of the First World War. Differing from Impressionism's emphasis on describing real objects, Expressionism highlights invisible, intangible feelings.

New Expressionism
The German painters came upon hard times when the Nazi administration terminated Expressionism. In order to memorialise the traditions of emotion and introspection caused by the failure of the German war machine, west German artists started to link creativity and German thought, which produced the new art style of New Expressionism. Jörg Immendor and Albert Oehlen are two well-known masters of the Düsseldorf School. One of their students, Marcel Eichner adopts the masters' thinking and adds his own idea of the free and open spirit of artistic creation, which allows emotion and connectivity in modern isolated society.

New Leipzig
The New Leipzig School could be called the birthplace of young East German artists who were sheltered from the globalized capitalized Western world. Aki Gallery presents Marcel, a student of Mr. Neo Rauch who is known as the living legend of the New Leipzig School. This School’s pupils develop new painting techniques, which use a wild mixture of multiple media like graffito and oil painting at the same time. Retaining Eastern German Socialism is one of the features of this school. Viewers will experience how New Leipzig artists translate different sorts of ideologies, commercialism and socio-economic backgrounds into vivid paintings.
