The Starry Sky – Chen Mei-Tsen’s Debut in Taiwan

Chen Mei-Tsen, a name having been absent from the Taiwan contemporary art society for a while but is still active in Paris, is going to be introduced to you at Galerie Grand Siècle in the New Year.  After graduating from the National Institute of Arts (the Taipei National University of the Arts now), Chen Mei-Tsen went to Paris for advanced studies.  Soon she got the artist residentship in France and has worked there since then.  In the early stage of her career as an artist, she employed various materials such as photography, resin, herbs, and varnish to combine with her physical body.  These series works include <Stratum> (1999), <Recesses> (2000), <Fossil> (2000), <Folds> (2001), <Fossil in Second State> (2002), and etc., from which viewers can clearly notice the trace of her body.

As an artist willing to experiment with different materials, Chen Mei-Tsen recently switches her focus to photography.  With a long list of international exhibitions in her resume, Chen Mei-Tsen is officially now introduced to the Taiwanese art society in her solo photography exhibition <The Starry Sky> in the February of 2009.  As its title suggests, all the demonstrated works in <The Starry Sky> have something to do with stars.  These photographic works – <M for Moon> (2003), <Asteroids> (2004), and <Stars> (2008) – create a both poetic and artificial sky.

The images of <M for Moon> are reflected on slides.  The various ranges covered by hair represent the transformation from the full moon to the new moon as if it implies the passing of time.  <Asteroids> provides an interesting comparison between fruits and planets.  Removed from our pre-existing knowledge about fruits, <Asteroids> transforms fruits into the abstract materialization of planets.  While we take a closer look at the surrounding details from a different perspective, the microcosm becomes the macrocosm.  The most recent work <Stars> tours into human bodies, bringing external universe on the internal x-ray films.  Within such a dichotomy, Chen Mei-Tsen captures a conversation between the universal law and its influence on the variation of organic life.

Jam: Cultural Congestions in Contemporary Asian Art

Galerie Grand Siecle and Taiwan Contemporary Art Link are pleased to present our artist Su Meng Hung (Sam Su) is showing his work in "Jam: Cultural Congestions in Contemporary Asian Art", at South Hill park in London, from 7 Feburary to 5 April 2009.

As populations surge and international migration grows steadily, the movement of people, objects and identities are activities that have taken on a political and cultural character of their own. Whether the movement is across the city, across the country or across the world we are confronted by the product of such movement, which creates cultural congestions - Jam.

The exhibition explores the concept of cultural congestion in visual art practices in work by emerging Asian artists, including Madi Acharya-Baskerville, Ming Turner, Tsai-Wei Chen, I-Ting Hou, Su-Chen Hsu, Emma Kwan, Feng-Ru Lee,Wang Ruobing, Bindu Mehra & Himanshu Desai, Hua Kuan Sai, Sam Su and Pei-Shih Tu. What happens when there is so much art, so many exhibitions and so many events? Does this overwhelm the viewer and do we develop sensory overload? Or does the congestion enable pausing and reflection of the richness and diversity across cultures? Jam: Cultural Congestions brings together artists from a range of cultures to explore and construct a visual jam, a think-tank and space created by cultural congestion.
